In this installation, I use the photos I took of the shadows of the trees and leaves on the pavement at night under the streetlight.

On the part of the ground, in each ladder (of Tran Hau Yen The’s work), I put two of my photos of the tree shadow following the circle on Do paper – a material which is also made from a tree, symbolizing the shadow of ladder trees.

On the part of the wall, I put together those photos of leaves shadow forming a round frame along four walls of the room, symbolizing an invisible wall, recalled a feeling of being imprisoned, captured in a limited space (In Chinese language, the character木 means tree, when it is inside the square 口 , it becomes 困, and  the meaning change to be  difficulty, being miserable).

This idea was born while I was taking nightly walk on Hanoi quiet streets. At this moment of time, there are less lights of motorbikes and cars than usual. In that space, the shadow of the trees, branches and leaves appeared strangely. Many shapes of the leaves kept haunting me. when I came back later, they all disappeared or there were other different leaves shadows appeared. Is the rain and the wind cause leaves to fall? Changing the leaves shadow, how about the shadow of human?

This make me related to a thought of a human’s life is also like a tree. After each difficult challenge in life, it is growing up with its own new energy. Life goes on, most of the time people never pay attention at the leaves shadow on the roads as well as most of the time, we forget the meaning of our existence in this life.
